The SEVIS July 2016 report demonstrates the importance of Vietnam has a host market for international students. Vietnam is now the 6th leading host market and continues to show ample growth while other key markets- Brazil, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia are in decline. This latest SEVIS report reinforces the timeliness to pivot recruitment efforts to S.E. Asia.
SEVP’s latest report, released on December 15th reveals that Vietnam is now the 5th largest host market for international students in the U.S. The report reflects all classes of student and exchange visas- and places Vietnam above Japan and Taiwan. Vietnam and S.E. Asia clearly need to be consider for active engagement in 2016.
November 16, 2016- Open Doors released their annual report of International Student Enrollment in the U.S. and Vietnam was highlighted as one of the important growth markets.
Vietnam’s importance as a top place of origin for international students was evident in the latest Open Doors Report. Vietnam is the #9 host market for international students in the U.S, growing from 16, 579 in 2013/2014 to 18, ,722 in 2014/2015 for a percent change of 12.9 percent. More importantly, Vietnam is a clear number three host market for Community College students and poised to overtake Korea as the 2nd largest source for Associates Students in the coming year. Vietnam sent 8.4% of all community college students to the U.S. in 2014/2015.
Thailand maintained its position as a Top 25 place of origin for International students and was the 17th largest source for Community College students in the U.S.

The U.S. school delegation that attended VETEC’s Fall Recruitment events in HCMC, October 24-25th, have already begun to report student applications for both Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 intakes. The recent events including visits to leading Vietnamese public and private high schools and colleges ( 10/24) and participation in a exclusive U.S. Study Fair( 10/25). The delegation also attended a Visa Section briefing at the U.S. Consulate. VETEC will be hosting recruitment events in both Bangkok( 3/17-3/18) and HCMC( 3/20-3/21) in March 2015.

VETEC hosted a U.S. Study Fair on November 2nd that included participation from 8 U.S. schools coming from California, Illinois, Missouri and Washington State. The fair drew a strong turnout with more than 150 students and parents attending the four hour event. The participating schools were very pleased with the quality of the student attendees and expect that a number of the students they met with will apply for admission as early as Spring 2014. VETEC plans to build on the momentum of the VETEC Student Fair and other Fall promotion activities by hosting a set of high-impact marketing events in Spring 2014. U.S. schools are encouraged to consider participating in the March events planned in Can Tho and HCMC to begin or jump starting recruitment efforts in Vietnam.
The 2013 Open Doors Report underscores the importance of Vietnam as a host market for international students in the U.S. Vietnam remains the 8th largest host market and one of the few markets in Asia showing continued growth- from 15, 572 in 2011/2012 to 16,098 in 2012/2013. Vietnam is also the 3rd largest host market for community college students, nearly 9% of all associate degree students hail from Vietnam.
